Painting: Advanced Imagery Study Period 5 2010

In this self directed semester of painting I have turned to the intriguing imagery of Surrealism and Dadaism. Starting off especially with a Dada painting technique designed as a method to paint the subconscious where the artist does no planning and is completely spontaneous to create patterns, marks, backgrounds on which the artist then paints what they think they see within the marks on the page.

Painting Media and Processes Study Period 2 2010

In the first semester of 2010 I have been experimenting with the use of stencils in painting to create my own unique way of painting with stencils. Using inspiration from a number of artists such as the character in Kara Walker’s silhouettes, the colour and patterning techniques of Miertje Skidmore, and painting on reflective surfaces inspired by Chloe Early’s paintings on aluminium I have experimented with surface type, size and shape. I have also experimented with the stencil subject matter including abstract shapes to more figurative silhouette shapes. I have tried to add a fun quirky aspect to the paintings using subject matter that interests me such as the umbrella, floating girls, butterflies and scraggly trees. Through these experimentations I have learnt the pros and cons of different surfaces, sizes and shapes as well as colour combinations and the effectiveness of black on black. I have also learnt the usefulness of watered down acrylic paint to create different effects.
From the beginning idea of working with stencils to my final products I think that my painting techniques have grown and developed into an effective abstract imagery that is pleasing compositionally, colour-wise and subject matter which I will continue to experiment with in the future.
